Sunday roast
A Sunday roast is often the first thing we cook for family and friends.
And although there are many elements - roasting meat, cooking vegetables, making gravy and Yorkshire puddings which may seem daunting in the beginning, once you get organised you will find it flows. And remember, the more you make a roast the easier it becomes, so practice makes perfect! Once you've mastered it, don't forget it will stand you in good stead for making a Christmas Day lunch, so don't worry, and follow Delia's recipes and techniques for the perfect roast dinner.
The right bakeware
To begin with you need to have good-quality roasting tins, not only will they ensure the heat will be distributed evenly, but they will last you for many years, so think of them as an investment when you buy.
Choose your meat
Chicken, beef, pork or lamb we have recipes for all the traditional choices, and you can see them in our collection of Sunday Roast recipes. If you need a little more help, we have a Timed Menu Planner for Roast Lamb, which will guide you step, by step to make a Sunday lunch for 6 - including a pudding.
Roast chicken is always a big favourite, and Delia included her fast-roasting method for The Best Roast Chicken in our Online Cookery School. Watch her video as she guides you, and you will get crisp, golden skin and moist, tender meat every time.
In Delia's Winter Book she says "I still think the roast beef of old England, served with meaty gravy, crisp Yorkshire pudding and crunchy roast potatoes is not only one of the world's greatest meals, it is something the British do better than anyone else", and we couldn't agree more. Her recipe for Roast Ribs of Traditional Beef includes Yorkshire Pudding and Horseradish, Creme Fraiche and Mustard Sauce, and serves 6-8 people.
For roast pork, you can also follow the fast-roast method. Fast-Roast Pork with Rosemary and Caramelised Apples can be prepared in advance, and will give you a roast for 6 people in 40 minutes.
