In the absence of an “airtight tin” will an “airtight plastic container” be okay. Also is tin suggested because the inside is dark, the question is in relation to storing a Christmas cake

Yes you can use an airtight plastic container.
I would wrap the cold cake in baking parchment and foil before it goes in the box, but still store it in a cool dark place.
