Asparagus is still around, as are fresh herbs, salad leaves, the first of the strawberries, mackerel, salmon, crab and lamb. It's a time of summer feasting..
The vegetable patch or allotment is burgeoning now: beans of all types, peas, courgettes and tomatoes will be ripening and the early summer berries will have been joined by peaches, apricots and imported melons.
Peppers and tomatoes are brilliant this month, as are plums, sardines and aubergines. Late-summer fruits include blackberries and early figs as well as the first of the apples.
