Start outdoor eating now
How long has this been going on? I can’t get the song out of my head - it is playing on a continuous loop in my mind. I tried to calculate how long we have been in lockdown or tier 4, or something very close to it. I now understand what it must feel like to be imprisoned – even the very word for our confinement is symbolic of imprisonment. We can, at least, start to chalk up the days to our release since the road map has been published, but this still seems to be a long way off. We need to be outdoors to feel free. And I have decided I am not going to wait any longer for this to happen. I am taking action now.
Which is where an outdoor patio heater comes in. At the very hint of sunshine or warmth I shall be outside. I long to eat every meal outdoors. So, with this in mind I have invested in this electric heater to make my dream a reality now. And it will enable me to see friends at the earliest opportunity in April.
The one I have chosen is not too expensive and I went for electric for ease of use - I didn’t fancy carrying heavy gas canisters from the shed every time one ran out. It heats up really quickly and throws off enough heat to make eating outside on my small terrace possible even in March with a sweater on.
The heater is freestanding and the design nice to look at, resembling a table lamp, with an oval-shaped head. It has a choice of 3 heat settings – one bar, two bars and all three – which means I can regulate it all summer. It comes with a heavy base making it very stable and the stand can be adjusted in height and the head tilts. It is cheap to run at only 10p per hour and you can buy a cover (available from March 5) to protect it when it is not in use. I bought an outdoor extension lead with anti-surge to ensure the plug stays dry. Now it does have the dreaded words “click here for assembly instructions” on the website, and whereas I normally would run a mile at anything coming remotely close to flatpack, even I can confirm that it is “easy to assemble” as it says. It arrived only a few days after I placed my order and is standing ready.
The only thing I have to do is check the weather forecast and plan what I am going to eat for my first meal outdoors this year – but certainly not my last.
