Romantic lighting for a summer supper party
The iconic Delano Hotel on Miami’s South Beach has beautiful tall lanterns with candles decorating the outdoor dining terrace and lighting the way down to the garden. Who, I thought, could light these every night and then blow them out? I then realised that, whilst looking completely realistic, they were artificial, but it still left the question: who turned them on and off each day? Were they, in fact, light sensitive? A quick piece of research when I got home made me realise that they were operated by remote control!
I wanted these lanterns and candles to light my outdoor terrace for summer supper parties. So I have tracked them down (or ones very similar) for you. It has not been easy. The lanterns need to be the tall stainless steel type, which are rustproof so I can leave them outside (many are not). The pillar candles also need to be tall and look completely real, slightly burned down, with an outer wax finish, and a flickering light. Several orders and returns later have given me the look I yearned for.
The lanterns I went for are by a German company, home+; rustproof; a beautiful design; heavy so they won’t blow down in wind; and can be left out even in the rain for the whole summer. They are particularly well made and (for those of you who know) the glass is integrated in the frame and does not wobble as some of the cheaper models do! They can be bought in a small, medium, large and extra large size – I opted for the large at 70cm tall. And I ordered four.
The candles are by OxoxO and I ordered four of the 22cm candles with a remote, since I had bought the tall lanterns, but you can buy them in different sizes They are each lit by 3 AAA batteries (which are not included) and have the ivory look of church candles. The flickering effect makes them ultra realistic.
In fact, I have not had one guest yet who has thought they were not real. But my dinner parties have become the talk of all my friends.
