Fever-Tree Tonic Water
Why?
Opens up a whole new world of gin
You can’t fail to notice the explosion in the gin market. Whereas there were once four or five brands of gin on the supermarket shelf there are now dozens and dozens (and many with a hefty price tag). It is difficult to know how to navigate this new world of gin, unless you just buy a different bottle each time and try them. Which is where Fever-Tree comes in.
The people behind Fever-Tree were clever enough to see that the gin market was getting crowded and spotted the opportunity to market a tonic water to go with all these new artisan drinks. In fact they say “If ¾ of your drink is the mixer, mix with the best”. But they did not just launch one premium tonic water, they have managed to launch a range of tonic waters to match the gins on the market. How? By classifying the gins by their flavour profile in much the same way as, say, the perfume market, with gins that are “fresh and floral”, or “citrus and herbaceous”. All of this is explained in their Pairing Wheel, which is a really clever piece of marketing. You can find this wheel online.
So if you like a particular gin, and I like Silent Pool with its beautiful glass stoppered bottle, and Hendrick’s with its fat chunky bottle, then I find that these come under “Fresh and Floral Gins”. And to go with them is Fever-Tree Elderflower Tonic. It makes for a completely new taste experience. But if you like the gins listed under “Citrus and Herbaceous” then go for Mediterranean Tonic; or “Juniper Rich and Robust Gins” go with Aromatic Tonic; and finally “Sloe and Sweeter Gins” go with Lemon Tonic.
But don’t just stop there, forget the ice and a slice (of lemon) in old-fashioned G&T’s, and add a slice of cucumber to the Elderflower Tonic drinks; or a sprig of rosemary to the Mediterranean Tonic. Let your imagination go wild now it is February, with this whole new world of gin.
Conclusion:
A modern cool G&T
