The butter in Garibaldi

In the Garibaldi biscuits recipe you specify "spreadable butter". Is ordinary butter (softened in the microwave) OK, or will that make them too hard? Or is a mixture of oil and butter a decent substitute?

Ordinary butter that is soft will be absolutely fine.
