Pear and almond cake calls for self-raising flour which is not available here. I have tried many times to make it using plain flour and adding various amounts of bicarb etc, but nothing seems to work well, Can you help?

Can you get baking powder?
If you can it’s 1 level teaspoon of baking powder to110g plain flour.
If you can’t get baling powder it’s quarter teaspoon bicarbonate of soda & half a teaspoon cream of tartar to 110g plain flour.
