Keeping a cake with just a marzipan topping

Hi Lyndsay, If I wanted to top the Delia classic Christmas cake with marzipan with no icing should I follow the usual marzipan recipe? How long will the cake last if it's not protected by the icing? If I cook the marzipan would it last longer?
Bought marzipan will last longer that homemade but yes, the cooked version of homemade will keep better than raw.
Don’t worry about not having the icing layer but to help prevent the marzipan drying out too much and cracking I would keep the cake in an airtight tin but also cover the cake with a layer of clingfilm.
