Is the Hot Cross Bun recipe wrong?

Hot Cross Bun recipe
The recipe doesn't mention kneading the dough - is this an error? I followed the recipe to the letter but my buns were very dense. My instinct would be to knead the dough before proving to work the gluten. Disappointed as this is the first time a Delia recipe has let me down.

I’m sorry to hear that your hot cross buns were dense.
This recipe deliberately cuts out the traditional kneading to make them quick, easy and more likely to be made at home.
I agree that are not like anything you can purchase but we love the flavour and given time to double in size they are lighter in texture.
