Why?
The perfect tool if you want to peel asparagus
To peel or not to peel asparagus? Until recently if someone had asked me if I peel asparagus, I would have said I really can’t be bothered. Or, as Shirley Conran once famously said “ Life is too short to stuff a mushroom”. I have always done the old tried and tested way of snapping the stalk where it naturally wants to snap, and that’s it. On the odd occasion I attempted to peel asparagus, I found the peel seemed to wrap itself around the blade of the peeler and needed to be washed out every few minutes before I could continue. And this was frustrating. So, even though I know peeling makes the asparagus more tender, I was firmly on the side of the non-peelers.
That was it until I tried this little gadget, which I did by chance, having been given it as a present. The gadget is not called an asparagus peeler but is, in effect, a tomato peeler. Confused? – well read on. I was initially very sceptical about the tool - why would anyone want a tomato peeler when it is incredibly easy to pour boiling water over tomatoes and seconds later you can literally just slip off their skins? Maybe worth it if you just want to peel one. However, since it was a gift, I wondered if you could use it for other things. I tried it on peaches successfully and then gave it a go on asparagus where it came into its own. The peel comes off in thin strips in seconds.
So I may be mad to suggest buying a kitchen tool, which I feel is not doing the job it was designed to do – but then again Zyliss should remarket it as an asparagus peeler!
If you want super tender asparagus to serve during the season invest in one of these. But you may wish to remain on the other side of the fence with the non-peelers.
Conclusion:
Tender asparagus guaranteed
