Snap, Sam, I was asking myself this just this morning, can't believe it! I speak Spanish most of the time at home so I was trying to remember the English usage. Came to the conclusion that it is "lay" and that there might be confusion with the verb as a result of wider use nowadays of the term "table setting".

I set the table. I've heard lay as well, but in my family we use set. Mind you, in Portuguese it's "pôr", which means "place"...

How do you put washing out? Do you hang out the washing or peg out the washing. Here we say - hang it out!

Lay the table, hang out the washing.
When a meal is over I say "shall we sit back". OH thinks this is odd. Is it?

Set the table in our house - although sometimes if it's a fork only dinner, we set the tray and have it on or should that be off our laps?!!! But that's another story.

I think that I both 'set ' and 'lay' the table at different times. Though, if you think about it, they neither of them make much sense. I 'hang' out the washing and when it's dry I 'bring it in'.
we set in Australia... Ive never heard anyone here say lay. (except for the egg.)
Mum lays the table, but I set it. I also hang out the washing, load the dishwasher, change the bedding etc........
Maybe it`s time to get someone in to help, just to see what they do???
I don't do anything ................ pay someone to do it all!! lol

Do you vacuum or hoover? I run the cleaner over (but not literally!).
Lovely husband sets the table in our house for our tea..
We have dinner at lunch time and tea at dinner time..keep up there!!
Lay the table ... as far as vacuuming or hoovering ... I know I packed it in a crate when we moved out to France 5 years ago but I haven't seen it since ... or the iron either .... which brings me onto ... EE-THER or EYE-THER ... ?
