I had lunch at Atul Kochhar's restaurant yesterday (sublime food and a million miles from your usual vindaloo!!) where they were matching Merrydown cider with Indian food. It was a total revelation - much better than beer or wine and the fruitiness of the cider really complemented the spicy food well. Don't think it would work with any old cider as some are much sharper but this was really gorgeous. Thoroughly recommend it to you Indian food fans.
I strongly agree. I remember having lunch with a work colleague (He is from Somerset so knows about cider) in an Indian Restaurant and he suggested cider. It went down very well.
Jo, thanks for the tip. Must try it next time I'm doing Indian meal.
wow i have been wanting to go to Benares for ages - did you enjoy it?
My sister always has cider with a curry - Magners - and it looks like Irn Bru!!
Benares was amazing - I can honestly say it was among the best food I've ever eaten. Indian but not Indian if you know what I mean, ie very delicate, intricate, imaginative spicing. I think Merrydown is 'softer' than some other ciders so not sure if all cider would work as well but it was truly fantastic. Give it a go next time you're having curry!
