Hiya is there anything that you have tried that you can put into tea which is not dairy? we tried rice dream but it was horrible, does soya milk go in tea or does it curdle? would be grateful for any help on this, my daughter is off all dairy at the mo with her Crohn's. Thanks : )
Hi Impi, I use unsweetened soya-no curdling and I don't have much. It takes different to cow's but def not unpleasant. I would recommend soya. J x
Impi, she might like oatly on cereals. I have tea and coffee black; you don't need milk with it. Crohn's is such a miserable condition, I do feel for her.
Hi Impi, I use soya milk all the tme, but not cheap own-brand stuff. Alpro or Soya Life are both the best, (Soya Life used to be called So Good). They all take a bit of getting used to but once you're into the faintly custardy taste you won't mind it - if I get a sniff of fresh milk now it smells "off" to me! They're fine in tea but curdle in coffee if it's too hot. They act just like milk for making sauces, baking etc., and I prefer them to Oaty or Rice milk. And of course you only need to read the pack to see it's all organic and full of vitamins and calcium and better for you than dairy milk, and less fattening too :-))
Highly recommended - Bramble xxx
Has she tried goats milk. Tried it at a friends as they didn't have anything else and it was OK. Tasted like normal milk.

Thanks for the suggestions goats milk is a no go as it has almost as much lactose in it as cows milk, we will have another try with the soya milk, she did use it on her porridge during the winter but I think for her tea we need the unsweetened one, she is finding that if she keeps off sugar, wheat and dairy it helps to control the bloating.
Thanks Gerry for your concern. Yes Crohn's is a horrible disease, she has had it for nine years now and has undergone three lots of surgery all while she was doing her GCSE's, A levels and her Uni degree, the past two years have been better but she has now gone through just about all the medication that is out there for it. She is now on an injection every two weeks which seems to keep the lid on it but still suffers 'flares' every now and again. She is nearly at the end of her Masters degree so is trying everything she can to keep well, it restricts her diet a great deal as she also has problems eating veg and fruit, some are OK but others make her very poorly, all trial and error I am afraid. Makes working out menus for supper quiet difficult : )
I always have soy in Starbucks, and there's never any problems with curdling. They do it in everything. Also a tip for any dieters - it's loads creamier than skimmed, but clearly better for you, making a cappucino or latte that much more satisfying.

Impi she may well find avoiding raw fruit and veg helps, I came to this conclusion gradually, and the only raw thing I eat now is a banana! As you say, trial and error, bless her!
Hi Bramble, yes she finds bananas are ok in moderation, also the occasional satsuma, or raspberries/blue berries are ok but everything in moderation is the key, just a few of each. she worries that with all her intolerances she does not get anywhere near the 5 a day we are meant to eat, potatoes, carrots, fine beans, soya beans are OK as long as they are really well cooked, no al dente in our house I am afraid! she will have good days and bad days with her tummy but gets very hungry which is difficult, vicious circle... : )
I gave up on tea - never found a milk substitute I liked in it and never liked it black - and eventually got used to fruit tea. Rooibos is nice black, and does not have all that teeth-clenching tannin - I recommend at least having a go. I've got some lovely red fruit rooibos from Waitrose which is delish.
Don't know if you're still reading this but I'll try. I use Alpro (which is now called Provamel again) organic sweetened. It's sweetened with apple juice as opposed to sugar, doesn't curdle in tea. I think it tastes better than cow's milk.
I'm still writing on my dissertation on Crohn's and will let you know when I'm finished.
I would be interested in your dissertation Cinnamon, if you need any input I am sure my daughter would be more than willing to help. She is having a go with unsweetened soya milk at the mo, it seems OK in tea but haven't tried it in coffee yet. seems OK on cereal too. she doesn't like anything that is sweet but i will tell her about the Alpro/Provamel, thanks. : )
I was told that it does curdle in coffee. I drink tea with milk but coffee black. I find the sweetened soya tastes a lot nicer. My friend made mashed potato with the unsweetened variety before and it was really nice. Good luck with it.
Thank you for the offer of help, I appreciate it. Unfortunately I have to stay very scientific and can't actually reference your daughter otherwise you would have had a lot of emails from me already. Almost done now.
