Re: Cream of Tartar

I got mixed up and bought Cream of Tartar thinking I didn't have any but the thing is... I still had an unbroken pack. I read on the Internet that you can use it to stabilize and increase the volume of beaten egg whites but how much should I use? And what else can I use it for? The truth is that I only have one recipe that needs it and I have no idea what to use it for!

Not food....but uses Cream of Tartar

Make Your Own Play-Dough

An unusual option......it was great stuff when I was a kid!
Make sure no one eats it.....but it is that salty that they won't try again!

Play Dough Recipe
Keeps around 1 month
You'll need:
Flour 3cups
Salt 1 1/2 cups
Water 3 cups
Vegetable Oil 2TB.
Cream of tartar 1TB.
Food coloring few drops or unsweetened "Kool-Aid" 1pkg.

Mix ALL of the ingredients in a large saucepan.
Cook over medium low heat stirring all the time, until the dough comes away
from the edges of the pan and it becomes difficult to move the spoon. Remove from heat. Cool until it can be handled.
Place on counter or wax paper knead 3-4 times.
Store in an air tight container.

have you got Nigella Lawson's "Domestic Goddess"? Her recipe for scones uses 4.5 teaspoons, so that will get rid of some of it for you!

it last more or less for ever, so just keep it where you can find it and you'll never need to buy it again!

I know Gilldoteee...... I just hate it when I buy things I don't need but when we are in the UK I try to go to the supermarket and get things I can't normally get here in France. I will have a look at Nigella's scones Lisa, thanks!

You could make your own Baking Powder.
Half a teasspoon of Cream of Tartar, quarter teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda - this makes the equivalent of 1 teaspoon of Baking Powder

Thanks Cambek, I think that I will make that when my baking powder finishes!
