....... at last. Just got the second lot of the chitted potatoes into the ground. Never thought we were going to do it. The last lot were Nicola which should be ready in 150 days. The first ones in were Semester. Biggs
That seems a long time Biggs? Twenty weeks?
I think they are main crop Bramble and should have been planted back in March. Weather has not been kind to prepare the ground etc. We will just have to wait and see what happens. OH says he will wait for the flowers and then decide what to do........ might have freshly dug up spuds for Christmas :0)))) or no spuds at all :0( Biggs
Oh right, I've never grown maincrops, or rather I've always dug em up after 3 or 4 months and eaten them!
Hello Biggs, not about potatoes, but thanks for your advice about the quilt and where to take it, might try that place you mentioned.
Glad you are enjoying your new life in France, I like to read about your adventures, it's sounds like you are having fun.
Pleasure, Violet Eyes. We found Dazzle to be excellent. If you do pop in please give the folks our kind regards. I think they may remember us, especially Ray, as we always tried to 'give him a hard time', only joking of course. The 'mad couple from Colchester' who finally managed to escape to France...... Fun and hard work have to go hand in hand in my book :0)))) Biggs
Hi Biggs, hope all is well down South, we have had a lot of rain prior to the weekend but glorious again today, meant we haven't had to water the plants and veggies though for a couple of days!!
Hubby planted Anya for first earlies and Bintje and Cherie (reds) for later cropping, all coming up a treat now, planted on the original chicken run so plenty of manure !! Looking forward to our first new potatoes very soon. Bought some New Potatoes for todays dinner which were Vitta (sp) and they were delicious, may look for some seed potatoes of that sort next year.
Yummt
Sorry can't spell :0)
Yummy
Our first lot of spuds that we planted out about a month ago, have just started poking their heads up out of the soil....we have got 4 sets in pots so far, and still got some chitting away.....was talking to next door over the weekend, and he was preparing his bed for his pots, and as he was digging he came across about 30 pots, that he never dug up over the winter, apparently they baked really well.
I was under impression it took on average 4-5 months, and are havestable once the flowers come, and its up to you when to dig up.
Heh, heh, just had our first bit of decent rain in a couple weeks in the last 10 mins. OH is delighted. I told him he must water the veggie plot tonight if it didn't rain ! We don't have an automated system yet and it means a long walk with the watering can :0)
Bintje have been recommended to me here as being a good all rounder. I'd love to hear what you think of them. I like Anya, too.
Pleased to hear about the spuds being OK having been left in the ground. I have heard of people doing this but was not sure. We used to grow Kestrels and I think they were usually ready in about 12 weeks. But we will hope we get the flowers and then the harvest :0)
