Found this -
has anyone ever tried it?
I find eggshells work for me, particularly around hostas.
I wash the shells out first, then place them on a metal tray which is stored in the oven. Take them out whilst the oven is on but put them back in the oven when you have switched it off: the residual heat will dry them and they will last longer. Then crush them with a rolling pin and sprinkle around your favourite plants.

I have a big pailful of used mussel shells. I wonder if this would work too. But how can I break them up. Any ideas what to use them for and how to smash them.

Hiya both ! KK I'd just put your shells in a bag and use a hammer. Having said that we have used all kinds of things. Apart from sneaking out in the wee small dark hours with a very sharp implement (bleurrrggghhhhh) the best thing we have found is Tesco's value beer in containers sunk into the ground. The slugs die happy :0) Bran mash was very good until it rained, the same with egg shell, rain seemed to give some kind of immunity to Colcestiran slugs. I detested Colcestrian slugs with a vengeance, they were so HUGE, as were the snails ! Happy hunting :0) Biggs
