How to Cheat

My husband bought me HTC for my birthday and I took it back without even opening the cover thinking "I do NOT cheat", however when I started to watch the series I changed my mind as it was not cheating in the way I expected. I have now bought the book again and it's a revelation, I love it. Still good food but nice and easy. I'm thrilled.

Hi Emsp

Welcome to the site.

I had to laugh at your post as I know for a fact that you're not the only one. I ordered the book on Amazon but when i saw some of the recipes in the Mail on Sunday, I htought 'No, not for me'. It wasn't until the book was out and loads of people here were busy trying out and raving about the lovely recipes, that I realised I'd make a big mistake - by this time though, everywhere had sold out of the book!!!!

I picked up a copy as soon as I could, and am loving the recipes; glad you are too.

Another welcome to the site! I felt exactly like you Emsp, and thought NO NO not for me!! But then i leafed through it in Asda and realized that actually there were some things I quite liked the look of, so I bought it, I must admit though it is not my favourite book of Delia's, that will always be the original Cookery Course which I turn to several times a week and have done since it was first published!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I have tried the sea food curry so far which was lovely and there's a fillet of lamb one i have all the bits for so am going to try that but there will be lots more. It's great for evening meals after the kids are in bed as most of the recipes are good and quick.

I raised my eyebrows on the first flick through the book too. When I sat down and read the book though I changed my mind. There's a mine of information there, and the short-cut ingredients are really useful. I've been completely converted to ready-mash and I'd never considered buying it before.

It's had a lot of negative press - not at all deserved, as anyone who has actually read the book can confirm!

I think you sum it up perfectly but saying it wasn't cheating as you expected!

I often wonder what the cheat actually is in some of the recipes.

I don't think I'd ever buy frozen mash or cans of fried onion, but I agree with Dolly that some of the short cut ingredients are really useful to have available.

I love the fact that all the tasting and testing has been done for us and now we know exactly what products to buy and have in the cupboard to produce a great meal at short notice.

It's a fabulous book and I am so glad some of the awful and unjustified critical comments seem to have stopped now.

Hi Emsp
If it's the Greek Lamb you're thinking of making - it really is delicious - and no cheating involved that I can see!
But be aware - some people have found that it dried out - so wrap it up very tightly/carefully - I did - and it was fine.
PS Welcome from me too x
