The Summerhouse: a taste of New England

summerhouse-2-150Initially set up as a pop-up (temporary) restaurant earlier this year, the Summerhouse is proving so popular that is may be permanent - good news for those who love simple food, well executed, in a lovely setting.

I was keen to try The Summerhouse, in an idyllic spot on the banks of the Grand Union canal in London's Little Venice. The Summerhouse seemed pretty solid in construction (I was expecting flimsy) with exposed brick
walls, painted wooden floors and a fresh New England look. The food, with more than a nod to New England eating, was fantastic: mainly fish and seafood, such as New England clam chowder, popcorn shrimps with sweet chilli sauce, beer-battered cod and chips and moules mariniere - all relaxed eating but prepared very well.

My yellow fin tuna carpaccio with rocket, Parmesan and truffle oil starter (£7) was exemplary while the Whole Sea Bass with Butter& Caper Sauce (£22) more than met my expectations. Friendly but unobtrusive
service plus a relaxed yet buzzy atmosphere gave this place real appeal and I'd definitely go back. The Summerhouse is open until October - pick a sunny day and go!
