This year British strawberries will be in abundance, and you should be seeing plenty on the shelves at the moment, but only 20 years ago the crop would have been destroyed by the recent inclement weather.

The early 90's saw the beginning of considerable investment, which were made to protect the crop from the elements. By growing strawberries under cover, the weather conditions haven’t had an adverse effect on supply, which is good news for consumers who prefer to buy British. Chairman of British Summer Fruits, Laurence Olins says, ‘We are expecting the effect of the warmth of March and cool April to combine to deliver sweet and flavourful berries; the crop is likely to be up 10% from last year, the result of increased plantings in response to consumer demand’

So, not only should you expect to see plenty of luscious British strawberries this year, there will be more of them!

If you intend to take full advantage of increased availability, why not try your hand making Delia’s Strawberry Preserve?
