Food and drink news: October 2012

This month on Delia Online we are concentrating on food for the autumn, with soups, stews, casseroles, slow cooking and one-pot meals.

A good roasting

Lakeland’s Glazed Terracotta Roaster bakes and steams food very slowly in its own juices, keeping it moist and tender. You simply add your meat and place in a cold oven, as the clay pot heats up the food begins to cook. No fat or oil is necessary, so it’s great way to cook if you need to cut down for health or dietary reasons. Also perfect for cooking casseroles and fish.

Glazed Terracotta Roaster is available from Lakeland - £29.99

Winter soups

Yorkshire Provender Soups are the brainchild of Belinda Williams, who has a very simple ethos for making soup, and that is to always use the best seasonal ingredients available. They are then hand prepared in her North Yorkshire kitchen by a small team. The result is soups that taste as close to home made you could possibly get – without making them yourself! Their winter range includes Root Vegetable with British Beef and Butternut Squash with Orange and Ginger, a great way to warm up a cold October day.

Yorkshire Provender Soups are available from Waitrose, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Co-op and northern branches of Asda, Morrisons and Tesco as well as independent food stores and online direct from Yorkshire Provender

Take it slow

There is nothing quite like coming home after a hard day to the welcome aroma of a casserole cooking, but not so easy if you are not at home to keep an eye on it. If you have ever been tempted to buy a slow cooker, why not try the new Judge 1.5 litre? It’s neat and compact – ideal if you are short of storage space, and great for making a casserole for just two people. Simply brown your ingredients put them in the cooker and set to cook in 8 to 10 - hours. For bigger families, the range is also available in 3.5L and 5.5L

Judge Slow Cooker is available online from Harts of Stur http://www.hartsofstur.com. For local stockists visit Judge Cookware http://www.judgecookware.co.uk

Be lazy!

When time is short, anything that helps cut down on preparation is a godsend, and the Very Lazy range of cooking concentrates will do just that. Each little jar is added to a few ingredients - all listed on the packaging - for a family meal in less than 30 minutes. The range includes Posh Sausage Casserole, Chilli Con Carne, Caribbean Chicken, Stroganoff and Green Thai Curry.

Very Lazy concentrates are available in Tesco and Asda, range varies in each supermarket

Straight to the table

The Aga Cookshop Cast Iron Collection range of casseroles, baking dishes, and frying pans are too lovely to keep hidden in the kitchen. If you like presenting stews and casseroles at the table, the Coalbrookdale Pot - pictured here - will impress your guests before they have even tasted your food! The range, which can be used in an Aga or any conventional cookers, and on all heat sources including induction, is handcrafted in the UK. Cast iron retains heat, which radiates on to the food and locks in flavour, it also keeps food warm, making it perfect oven-to-tableware.
