Our next book for July is The Island by Victoria Hislop. It’s a moving account of a woman’s journey to Crete to unravel her family’s history. When she arrives on the island she realises that the village her mother grew up in is close to the former leper colony of Spinalonga. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that this colony has great significance to the family story, while at the same time informing the reader of the terrible effects of leprosy on the individual and the community.
