Delia calls on every person in the UK to give 50p to droughts appeal

delia cafodNational treasure and Britain’s most famous cook Delia Smith has given her full support to the East Africa drought appeal. The ambassador for aid agency CAFOD ‘begged’ every adult and child in the country to give whatever they can to the DEC fund to help the 10million people in East Africa affected by the drought.

Delia said: “The situation is very grave and totally unacceptable. As a human family we simply cannot allow little children to just die of hunger and thirst without doing something urgently to help.”

“I applaud the thousands of British people who - even in hard times - have already given twenty or thirty pounds to this cause, or organised their own fundraising events. But even much smaller amounts that CAFOD and other DEC agencies receive will mean the difference between life and death for malnourished children.

“If every man, woman and child in Britain gave just 50p each right now £30 million could be dispatched to those in greatest need. So I am begging everyone who values human life to give something absolutely as soon as possible.”

DEC member agencies are working to urgently reach 10 million people in the grip of the worst drought seen in parts of East Africa in over half a century.

Large areas of Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and South Sudan - world’s newest country - are affected with thousands of families have caught up in the deepening crisis, trekking for days across parched scrubland.

With the next harvests in many areas expected to be poor there are serious concerns that the situation will spiral out of control unless action is taken now.

Despite the enormous challenges of reaching those affected, DEC agencies are already helping hundreds of thousands of people across East Africa with food, water, therapeutic feeding for malnourished children and medical treatment.
