Our next book for November (ie, you read it in November, then comment from 1 December) is a 20th-century classic published 50 years ago, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

The main plot of this beautifully crafted book concerns the trial of a black man for the rape of a white woman but the story is told through the eyes of Scout, the eight year old daughter of the man’s lawyer, the heroic Atticus Finch.

The first part of the book centres on Finch family life and presents a child’s view of the world in which they are blind to the racism surrounding them, with the trial providing the climax of the novel.
