Slow to surface
High temperatures at the end of March meant the earliest recorded harvest of asparagus. However, as the weather cooled throughout April production slowed significantly and in most cases stopped completely. Cold air and rain cooled the temperature of soil to compound the effect.
With the temperatures expected to drop over the next few days, growth is expected to slow down once again, and it is predicted that it will be another 10 to 14 days before full UK supplies will reach all retailers.
A spokesman from the British Asparagus Growers Association says, “Although growers are expecting the same amount of asparagus to be harvested, the season will be much shorter”
So – keep on the lookout, and when asparagus does arrive, make sure you are quick to buy!
