Letter from Zapallal January 2013

As always, there are plenty of events going on in Peru. Zapallal - Sharing the Struggle is a charity set up by Delia and Michael in the 1990s. They are always hugely grateful for donations: if you can spare anything, please do (details of how to donate are at the bottom of this page).

Brother Mark Writes:There is a new project in the school, partially funded by a type of quango. They are referring to it as aquaponic, as opposed to hydroponic, though the meaning of both words is connected with water, I think the idea is to build and stock tanks with fish that can be sold for eating. There is still quite a bit to do as finances seem stretched but it will be interesting to see if the project is successful.

Zappallal January 2013 Saturday, 8th was a national holiday and it saw the closure of the former pupils’ championships. The closing ceremony was simple but appreciated, especially as I was given a present in recognition of my faithful attendance over the nine years of championships. As demanded by law, we held the elections for the school council with two parties trying to woo the voters with posters, hand-outs and a Zappallal January 2013 public debate. In the end it was a bit of a landslide victory for the boy candidate – the majority of winners over the  years have been girls. It now remains to see how effective  he will be.

The last really effective mayor, as he or she is called, was in 2007. The science department put on an exhibition of the work of all the years and it proved quite popular, especially as they were selling food. I got another pleasant surprise when the students in the pastry workshop came to the library to present me with a very nice apple pie which I insisted on sharing with them.As a fitting end to the school year, we had a very fine Advent mass at which the singing was excellent, even though the pupils were being affected by the sun.

End of term saw the final exams and the accumulation of these and the three previous exams will decide if pupils go up, repeat a year or have to re-sit exams. Usually a tense time for them. There was shortened form of the Festival of English, with spelling tests, presentation of certificates and the last item being a choir of the 5th Year singing “Little Drummer Boy”. That went well but when they broke into “Feliz Navidad.. I wanna wish you a merry Christmas”, all the school joined in so we ended on a very cheerful note.

Zappallal January 2013 On 21st there were no classes and all the staff celebrated with a chocolatada – hot chocolate and paneton. They were split into groups and given carols they had to sing with prizes on offer. It was amusing if not completely musical. In the evening we had a gathering of pupils from our three schools in Lima and us in preparation for NANIPO – Christmas for the Poor Child. Over 1000 presents had been collected, plenty of food, and milk for the hot chocolate.

Zappallal January 2013 On 22nd they all went off to seven very poor communities to spend time with them, play with them and distribute the food and presents. It really was impressive to see all these youngsters putting themselves out for others less fortunate.I left for my holidays on 23rd so I missed the school leavers’ fiesta, which I hear went off very well and also the official closure of the school year. No doubt I’ll see photos when I go back.

The weather here is a bit different from what I left in Lima, so I hope you have not been too badly affected by the rain and floods.

May 2013 be a wonderful year for you and yours, full of peace and love.

Thank you to all those who have supported us in various ways.

God bless.Mark
