One of the tenants at work left a chicken out to defrost yesterday afternoon. I said he needed to put it in the fridge last night, but he forgot. Personally, I would roast it still and take the chance, but feel I can't advise the tenant to do the same.
What would you do?

Hi Saffy - chicken is well dicey. I personally would take the chance but to be honest, I would advise the tenant to get rid. If by chance he did get food poisening, you'd never forgive yourself. Luv, Loopy XXXX
I think you're right Loopy. We wouldn't mind taking the chance Saffy but you'd never forgive yourself if your tenant became ill. Plus it has been very warm so more chance of salmonella. What a shame!

No, I agree Loopy - I should have said that I have already advised him to chuck it (I'm not allowed to throw it as it is his property).

I'd cook it well and taste it. Live dangerously!
Well - we would Gerry, but the people Sue looks after are rather vulnerable so it's too much of risk. I can imagine our Saffy having sleepless nights, waiting to hear the bad news.

:o) Don't really want to have to deal with the aftermath of salmonella poisoning!!!
Bleurghhh
i'd cook it and wouldn't give it a second thought. i often leave meat out to defrost over night and accidentally forget to put it in the fridge that day! i'm still ok!!! if they are elderly tho it might not be a good idea.
Think the right advice is to 'chuck it', but, if it were me I would give a piece to the moggy and if he turned his nose up, then I would throw it. If he chomped away and asked for more I would cook and eat it and enjoy it.. Biggs
Personally, if it passed the sniff test then I'd cook it. I could never recommend anyone else do it though - especially not in a work setting or you'd find yourself facing a lawsuit today.
Biggs! And I thought you loved Sooty!!
Honey :-x
I'd cook it... but probably in a casserole for a long time to be sure that it was cooked right through to the inside of the carcase.
By the way Saffy, how is Casper settling in? Is he ruling the roost already? Does he bring in little presents for you like your last pussy cat?
Honey :-x
sorry a bit late in the day.....
but really it depends on the temperature of tenants kitchen, esp given the hot temps the south of england has had this last week...if it is a fairly cool kitchen, I would sugggest the same as you and ROAST the beast, and roast it well over its proper roasting time, so the meat falls off the bones.....then eat it as a roast dinner or alla saffy sue and freeze some leftover meat in container with gravy (i love you for this inspirational method) or make a curry up with leftovers, or a shed load of chicken and salad and mayo sarnies.
Sammy
I agree with others that the determining factor here lies in the fact that Saffy is in a work situation, paid to provide 'guidance' to those who have some vulnerability. As such, I think you have no option but to follow 'best practices' whenever it comes to safety matters, Saffy - and that would have to include rules of hygiene. (No matter what we might do in our own kitchens!!)
I entirely agree Jampling, Saffy is there to look after her tenants, I just hope she took the offending bird home, washed it and gave it a right good spatchcocking:-)))
