I have the type where you pre-freeze the bowl in the freezer. But I never have room to store the bowl, or remember to put it in in time to freeze. I would also like to know how good are the ones that freeze electrically?

Yes, I think I read something about freezing it for 12 hours before ... chances are I wouldn't think about it that much in advance. But the other ones that auto freeze seem to be hundreds of pounds aren't they ?

I used to have a Philips one you still see in the shops. You don't have to put the whole bowl in the freezer, just a disk which I always kept in the freezer, so it was always ready but the only problem was that the ice cream, once stored in the freezer became quite hard. Other than that it was lovely ice cream and the recipe book had lovely recipes for sauces. If I were to buy one now I would prefer one which freezes electrically as Guacamole says but they are rather big and expensive!

I have the Kenwood which is similar to Guacamole`s. You have to freeze it first, and finding room in the freezer can be a problem. It makes great ice cream, though, and frozen yoghurt is dead easy.
Electrical freezing ones are a fortune, but like Francisca, I`d buy one if money and space were not considerations.
I take notions, I still am ashamed to say that I buy ice cream regularly, and only use mine for special occasions.

I`d put an add in the wanted section of a local mag, must be mint, or brand new. Lots of people buy them and don`t use them.

Hi FG Ihave a Le Glacier ice cream maker,I love it.Yes it has to be kept in the freezer, but I always keep it full of small frozen items,so it doesn't really take up much precious freezer space.I haven't got the work surface space to give up to a big machine, you are advised not to move the large machines around.I have found mine an all round winner on price(about £35)and performance.Good Luck!

I used to have a Le Glacier and now have a Kenwood, both you store the bowl in the freezer and I don't find it a problem. Both make equally lovely ice-cream. I really don't think it's worth spending a lot of money on something to make ice-cream because it doesn't get used often enough in this house. We do eat ice-cream... but not as often as I would like only because of the calories. I must make more frozen yoghurt.

Thank you everyone for your opinions ... because of the price I think I will go for one that you store the bowl in the freezer - so I'm guessing apart from the size of the bowl (they seem to be either 1l or 1.5l), they're 'much of a muchness' ?

Again, French Girlie, if you go for a Philips you don't have to freeze the whole bowl, only the disk which you put inside the bowl. It depends on how much space you have in your freezer........

Sorry Francisca ... I did note that, but just forgot to put it in my last posting ... they do quite a lot of Philips appliances here in France so that's a possible. Thanks !
