Last Night of the Spring Proms - popular classics crowned with a jubilant flag-waving finale will return to the Royal Festival Hall for one evening on Saturday 29 April at 7.30pm. The soloists will be award-winning soprano Sky Ingram, tenor Adrian Dwyer and prolific Korean-born British violin soloist Joo Yeon Sir, recipient of many coveted awards. They will all perform under the baton of Stephen Bell accompanied by the London Philharmonic Choir and London Concert Orchestra.
From Ravel’s Bolero climatic and daring, the heart-felt tragedy of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake Finale, to the most famous waltz of them all Strauss’ Blue Danube plus Sibelius’ Finlandia rousing and turbulent at times but mesmerising and melodic too. Bizet’s Farandole from L’arlesienne adapted from a southern French folk song and dance is astonishing. Then from the first few brassy opening notes on the organ to the triumphant full choir in just over five minutes, Sir Charles Hubert Parry’s I Was Glad filled with choral ecstasy and prayerful reverence in equal measure. Verdi’s Brindisi, the drinking song from la traviata, despite its gaiety, is actually a tragic story of love and death. The brilliant 'Czardas', by Monti, is sure to get your toes tapping. The elegant O soave fanciullafrom Puccini’s La bohème tells an epic but deemed love story.
Of course, no ‘Last Night’ would be complete without the perennial favourites Rule Britannia!, Jerusalem, Nessun Dorma and Land of Hope and Glory. Feel free to join in and sing-along at those flag-waving moments, because that is what makes a ‘Last Night’ concert feel so special for the orchestra, choir and audiences alike.
