Can be served slightly warm with a dollop of thick cream. If I make it in advance I often bung it in the oven on a low light to reheat. If you've cooked your main course in the oven, you can switch off the oven, put it in to warm while you have your dinner!
MethodPREHEAT THE OVEN TO 160C/325F/GAS3.
IN A LARGE BOWL, CREAM TOGETHER THE BUTTER AND SUGAR UNTIL LIGHT AND FLUFFY. SIFT THE FLOUR AND STIR INTO THE CREAMED MIXTURE TO MAKE A FIRM DOUGH. WITH YOUR HANDS, SHAPE THE DOUGH TO FORM A BALL. PRESS A LITTLE LESS THAN HALF OF THE DOUCH INFO A 23CM/9 INCH LOOSE BOTTOMED FLAN TIN. ARRANGE THE APPLE SLICES OVER THE DOUGH AND SPRINKLE WITH ONE TABLESPOON OF SUGAR WITH YOUR HANDS, PRESS THE REMAINING DOUGH OVER THE TOP OF THE APPLES. SMOOTH THE TOP WITH THE BACK OF A SPOON AND BAKE FOR ABOUT 45-50 MINS UNTIL PALE GOLDEN. LEAVE IN THE TIN TO COOL THEN CUT INTO WEDGES.
