Cooking time for split peas
Asked on 19 Jan 2019 by SallyM
Hi Lindsey. I notice that when Delia uses green split peas, she says there is no need to soak. I've just bought a packet from Sainsbury's and the wording is that you need to soak overnight and boil hard for 10 minutes before using. I thought that was only for red kidney beans. Are Sainsbury's just being over cautious?
Hello,
Your right it is only kidney beans that need to be boiled for 10 minutes after soaking to make them safe to eat.
For the split peas I expect soaking overnight and boiling for 10 minutes until tender is the equivalent to not soaking overnight but simmering for an hour to 1 ¼ hours.
Best wishes
