Tomatoes

"But tomatoes - oh no. Has anyone had any success yet? Usually we'd already be clearing space in the freezer but this year it's looking pretty grim."

Yes... our Tumblers are doing well this year. And this is an excellent year for peppers and cucumbers too. I have loads of peppers on the plants this year. Not as big as they might be, but loads of them and they're ripening very well. Whereas last year the peppers were very disappointing.

Tomatoes

Mine have been very successful - they've been very prolific. After reading on this site they can be frozen I've bagged up quite a few. Hope they will be successful. Actually we've had a very good year gardenwise. The grass went a bit brown but soon sprang back into life after a few heavy showers. The Phlox, Agapanthus, Clematis, Roses, Cerinthe and daisy-type plants have been very colourful. Due to mobility problem I haven't been so active in the garden but managed to get help from a man who although professes he's not a gardener, he is excellent at clearing brambles and chopping down overgrown things.

Welsh summer

Dottie... great that you appear to have had a good balance of sun and rain. It does make all the difference. But just wanted to say that I'm glad that your clearer upper in the garden has proved to be successful. I know you were apprehensive, but sounds like he's quite a find if he keeps on top of brambles etc. We have a real job to keep on top of the brambles here too. Recently did a big new hosta bed and the brambles are coming up all over the place!

interesting the dragonflies come down the pipe Honey - never thought of that...!

Tomatoes - we have lots growing on our four plants - all very green at the moment but getting qutie big.

Not sure when they 'usually' would ripen but i know we are a few weeks behind you guys as we warm up later in spring

the plum tomato plant is trying to take over the whole bed - it did nothing for ages and has gone mad in the last month. It seems to get wider every day

Tomatoes

Perhaps I should have said that mine are in the greenhouse. But some summers I am rather late getting mine going and a poor summer can mean that they're late to ripen. But this year I seem to have got it right for once (with the help of a good summer).

Roaming Roma's

got our toms in the greenhouse early this year & gave them some heat at night.house is on the north wales/cheshire border, lovely spot but can get a tad chilly!!.luckily they had reached ripening size during the hot weather earlier this year so we've been eating a fantastic crop of super marmande & gardeners delight for weeks.the marmande are fab, solid with little or no pulp/seed & deeeeelish!!
but what is it with the plum toms? like your's,our's are oudoors, covered in fruit & the size of bl**dy triffids!
bonus is that all three packs of seeds were part of a 6 pack of mixed salad crops from the pound shop, for, you guessed,a pound!c'mon!!

The plum toms are the ones that have disappointed here, lots of green fruit on what's there but the vines are so small this year. Others (cherries both red and yellow, and normal sized round ones are OK but not superb. Last year there were zillions.

Black Prince Tomatoes

Friend gave me a huge bag of these, not very attractive as they are really liverish red, but lovely and dense flesh and very juicy. I skinned and froze 2 lots and the third I made some really delish Tomato sauce for pasta, beautiful taste to them.

Oh Dear !!

"What do the Black Princes look ile when skinned? are they still very aubergine-like?"

Sorry Chazza found out today the Toms I have been calling Black Prince are really called Black Russian !!!

They are really quite dark inside too, dark maroon red not purple, and not the most attractive tomatoes I have ever seen, but that said the taste is really rich and delicious, lots of flesh so for sauces they're great !!
