I queried the Peruvian stuff on sale in Sainsbugs, they said there was a shortage of the UK asparagus due to the weather.

Sainsbury's were right - apparently all the rain is makeing the asparagus sink back into the ground a bit so it can't be harvested. As soon as the weather dries up apparently there will be plenty. I hope so, I too only buy it in season and am really looking forward to getting stuck in!

asparagus

They only seem to have it in season in the bit of Basse Normandy where we have a house. I was having some relatives over and wanted to make a really nice lunch as they are very carnivorous and i am a vegetarian. The plan for the main course was Delia's asparagus and gruyere feuilletes with truffled potatoes and something else. I could only find bottled asparagus in August :(
Got some English from Sainsbury's too last week. They only had the tips though.

Asparagus

We actually have a little piece on our Home Page explaining why there is no British asparagus available at the moment. It's in the black box....

Thanks for that Nor. That explains why I still only have one solitary spear coming up ! I don't think it is going to be ready for a few weeks with this cold spell.... Mmmm, perhaps putting a tunnel over it would help keep it warm.

Bought some English in Tesco this morning, none on the local market in The Potteries. Would be some at local farm shops but no time to visit today. Never buy foreign. Will make D's nearly hollandaise and serve with poached salmon. xx

Asparagus

Thanks for that Noreen. I'm not hugely keen on Asparagus but the rest of the family love it - I just drizzle it with a little olive oil, lots of parmesan and some black pepper and grill it. This goes down great with the girls and is a nice healthy starter.

Like the sound of that with the parmesan. Will try that, if mine ever get out of the ground.

Asparagus

I just saw some in Worcestershire asparagus in Waitrose in Norfolk. It looked awfully spindly! Loads of Peruvian and Spanish on the shelves, and interestingly it didn't look like anyone was buying it as there was so much stacked up.

Asparagus

Heard on the radio that the UK asparagus season is washout due to the fields being flooded. The Asparagus festival in the Vale of Evesham was cancelled this weekend, and if you do see UK stuff in the shops it's likely to be pricey.

Foaming Hollandaise

I can also recommend Delias recipe. Its quick and so light. Lovely with salmon too.

Its half price in Sainsburys!
