Holiday Reading

I always collect books during the year via friends or Charity shops to read on holiday . I then leave them there for others to read .Quite often biography's or autobiography's or just plain chick lit .

Kate Morton

Saffy, if you enjoyed Kate Morton`s books then I can recommend these 2 which I took on holiday.

It`s "The Summer House" by Mary Nicholls and "The Memory Garden" by Rachel Hore. Have a look on Amazon for details.

Wilkie Collins' Woman in White

"I've never heard of this book. It's obviously liked by many, including James, so I'm curious to hear more about it!"

Used to be on every school's reading lists for Eng Lit, decades ago.
Get it from Project Guttenberg.

Holiday reading

Yes I have The Help lined up for the hols also, plus another called The Slap which sounds very intriguing - an account of the friction that ensues after a family friend slaps someone else's child at a BBQ. Plus a book called One Day by David Nicholls which sounds like a nostalgic wander through the 80's & 90's - just my era!

Holiday reading

Well, it's not holiday time over here at present, although we are going to Northern Queensland soon, to get a bit of sun!!

Gerry - thanks for that information.

I read 'The Help' with my Book Group and thought it was good.
Also did 'The Slap' earlier in the year. Set in Melbourne with lots of sex and swearing, so some group members didn't like it!!
I enjoyed it, although some of the characters are really objectionable!! Couldn't put it down, though!

James

Thanks for the link for ' Woman in White' - I realise you posted it ages ago, but I must have missed it!
I've just ordered the book from the library so I won't read the plot on the Wiki link. But according to your opinion of Wiki on another thread they probably got it wrong, anyway!!!!

If you like travel books I recommend Tim Moore, he's knowledgable and hilarious. I'm about to embark on Barbara Kingsolver's latest - The Lacuna but I suspect it's not for languishing on the beach!

Holiday Reading

I've just come back from Jamaica and only managed to get through one book - it was exhausting holding books up !!! Big mistake was taking Bill Brysons new one in hardback - flippin enormous and too heavy to hold up (I could only manage something the weight of a rum and coke). I also took The Help but didnt read it so looking forward to that now too keep me occupied on the post holiday detox!

Anyway the one book I did manage was Matthew Fort - Eating Up Italy, he writes sooooo beautifully and is so descriptive. You can guarantee your belly will be rumbling if you read this before lunchtime. Highly recommended.

On the trash side oh I love a bit of Jilly and Jackie, the smuttier the better too.
