"As far as I'm concerned, the Kindle is by far the best ereader, it trounces over the temperamental, badly built and slow running Sony models."

I've have to see how I find the Sony when I get it one thing I am not interested in is "my brand name is better than your brand name" wars.

The Kindle may well be a nicely built model - I've no reason to believe otherwise.

My issue with it concerns the use of proprietary formats over an open standard which is used by many brands.

I (/my parents) do not want to spend time
or money getting stuff in say MOBI and in a few years time when we get a reader find we prefer another makers but have too much invested in one brands own format.

This is nothing I have specifically against the Kindle but something that forms part of all of my hardware/software considerations.

Kindle.

Can't say it bothers me in the slightest. If my kindle breaks down, I'll just buy a new kindle. it's not as if Amazon are going to withdraw from the market any time soon.

Worrying about such things is just like saying "I'm not going to buy a VHS video player just in case they ever come up with something better in the future".

The Kindle does everything I need it to do, I see no reason to worry about what might happen in five years time.

For sure, each to their own policy.

Personally, though, I do believe vender lock in goes far beyond worrying about a video format, according to Wikipedia

Kindle.

Fair enough, you must think what you must think, but it does not bother me in the slightest.

I also do not use Wiki, its so unreliable.

It's pretty easy to convert ebooks from one format to another anyway should I ever need to do so, but I can't imagine I will. I buy a book, read it, and then its done with. Not a problem if I cannot access it at a later stage, and if I really want to, I could just buy it again if its that important to me.

I certainly would not buy what is, IMO, a reduced quality product just for this reason. But, we are all different.

I normally like Sony products, but they have got it wrong on their ereaders, again, IMO.
