I've done this before....

But not for a while.

It's my birthday today and I've had the best one ever.

I'm feeling particularly blessed.

I'm blessed with a wonderful, really close family - they live very near and are very close to us in pretty much every aspect of our daily lives. We have fan bl**dytastic friends. But I have a group of very close friends that I made from this site that i speak to daily and some (from the purple underground) that I don't speak to as much as I would like to) and others here that don't do Facebook either. Delia Online friends.... You were here when I was lonely and needed company. You supported me, gave me advice, gave me friendship, gave me support, gave me confidence and set me up go returning to work. Although I don't come back here as much as I would like, you are often in my thoughts and I hope that the camaraderie and support that I found and benefited from is still here for others when they need it.xxxxx

Happy birthday Saffy! We have noticed that lots of our original posters aren't often on the forums these days, so it is lovely to see you popping up! We are also very happy to see you have found good friends through Delia Online.

I think that must have been a long time ago, Saffy, as the site hasn't had a chat and support forum for a long while.
It's mainly cookery based now - which is fair enough, I guess.
The other stuff must have moved over to Facebook and other places. Another foodie forum I go on has a very active Coffee Place/Chatterbox forum, rather like the one you remember, I suspect.

facebook...

is that where everyone's gone?
Some days it's like a ghost town in here.
What a shame as it was once so lively.

Facebook

I fear Sonya is right Violet, one upon a time the forum was the only place to have a chit chat, once the Social Networks started up lots of people toddled off there.

It is very quiet on the forums these days, but you may be surprised to know that our visits to the site are higher than ever and we just had great figures for the festive season! Funny isn't it?

Maybe there are more people vistiting but how long do they stay? M&S could say the same. I only take a short cut through their store, I don't stop to buy anymore.

This place is the first site I visit in the morning, that's once I've got up of course, and depending on what I'm doing and who's around I call back a few times and as you must know, nobody has posted all day sometimes.
The place is still friendly but too quiet.
I think to myself start a new post but then who's going to read/reply to it so I often don't.

The only time it's "busy" is when there's spat or a quarrel going on and then everyone joins in.

I hope this doesn't start one :0)

Facebook etc

I'm relatively new to this site for chat - I have to say that having a new mobile has made it much easier & I now browse as I travel with work, whereas I couldn't do that before. It can still be difficult to post when on the move however, as it seems impossible to keep a stable 3G signal on my train routes.

I also didn't realise that there was a support bit at all previously - but I still think I'd be lost without Delia, in whatever form she takes! I head here first for every recipe search & certainly every food query. I have FB but tend to use that for both the flippant and/or general stuff & for keeping in touch with friends who can't/won't cook.

Nor, I'm not surprised about high numbers of visits in the festive season. Delia's Xmas cake and mincemeat recipes seem to be very well known in UK.
The other foodie forum I visit mentioned them a lot before Christmas - lots of recommendations to use Delia's recipes!!

Not sure...

I'm not sure you can blame Social Networking entirely. I think that people drifted away when they felt it was inappropriate to chat about anything that wasn't food related. We lost the Coffee Break area were we felt we could chat about this that and the other. We found some of our threads were frowned upon and some people were rather judgmental and outspoken. I no longer felt supported, appreciated and welcome. It's sad because like Saffy, I so much enjoyed Delia online back when we were more of a community of friends who helped one another with their problems... be it food or otherwise.

I still visit from time to time and have a look to see what you're all talking about because I feel I have a lot to learn from you all.

For instance, tonight I've found out why my bread isn't quite as good as it's been... lack of gluten in the flour. :o) Thanks.

Not sure...

Hi Honey - think you're right about the effect of the forum change when the Coffee Break went. Made it a more food focussed forum, not so much personal stuff.
Well, not just food - books, gardening etc. but those forums get very few posts.

Then the Social Networking made it easier for people to contact each other - so maybe a combination of things.

I was often surprised about how much very personal stuff people would post on a public forum - I guess Facebook is more private, and just for "friends".

Not sure...

Meant to say, I believe you're living back in the UK now, is that right? Hope you've settled back OK. Was moving always part of your long-term plan?

There used to be quite a few people from France - Biggles and The Cat's Mother I recall, and some others too. Don't hear from them any more on here, which is a shame.
SueG seems to be the only French one who comes on here now - correct me, anyone, if I'm wrong!!

You are so right Honey

I agree with every word that Honey has written about the forum.
It used to be fun on here , so many laughs , so many topics , everyday we had something different to discuss, so many laughs along the way,

THEN,
Well , it all changed , so may topics were not allowed , some were deleted , some were frowned on , & in the end I was not sure what we could & could not discuss.
I ended up giving the site a miss most days.
I used to enjoy being part of this forum , often replied in verse , & generally it was a fun informative place to vist.
I do drop in from time to time , but now I would never instigate a post as I am not sure what goes anymore.
Yes Honey you hit the nail on the head.
