Fridge freezer purchase advice

I want to buy a new refrigerator - a fridge freezer really - so I can clear out, defrost and clean another small chest freezer in anticipation of this year's allotment produce, and have extra fridge space in order to keep vast quantities of Pimms and beer cold, ready for the blazing heat of July.

It must be white, tall and thin, as energy saving as possible, self defrosting and relatively cheap. It will be quite out of sight so does not have to be a looker.

Has anyone any recommendations? Or warnings? I seem to recall that one blew up recently, I bet they're cheap at the moment.

Chazza, you don't say what size you're looking for, but the way your weather's going you'll only need a very small fridge:)
Can't help you really, I'm afraid, as makes are rather different over here. Sizes might be too? We recently bought a stainless steel Electrolux one with the freezer at the bottom. It's energy efficient but is 510litres, so fairly large.
It's also quiet - that was another thing we looked at, that you didn't mention. Although if it's out of sight it might be out of hearing too?
Fisher and Paykel are popular here (from NZ) but our last one was rather noisy.

"... the way your weather's going you'll only need a very small fridge:)" Oh very funny, you wait until your summer arrives, then you'll be begging for rain!

Seriously though - I've just noticed there's a 'd' in fridge but not in refrigerator, sorry about that.

Size - it should be up to 6 feet tall (180cm) and about 2 feet 8 inches (80cm) wide, depth to be in proportion but not critical. It should have a door that doesn't make it wider when open.

And sound - how could I have forgotten, you're right, it has to be quiet.

You can get Electrolux here so I'll check that, I'd like a stainless silver one but all the other utilities are white (it's not for the kitchen) so white it has to be.

Fridge freezer

my mum brought my nan a new fridge freezer about 6 months ago - its a hotpoint, has larger fridge than freezer - but nan can get a few loaves of bread lots of milk and lots of "ready meals" in her freezer - and the fridge space is actually very spacious i do believe its the hotpoint 200 - slightly taller than your requirements - and a reasonable price, and energy efficient too, it doe shave a hum but all fridges and fridges have the occassionaly hum and click don't they - its nothing to wind you up and annoy not offensive at all, has a nice chunky door close feel too - you know what i mean, you know you have shut the door type clunk.

and also currys took nans old fridge away for free.

Fridge freezer

Hi Chazza
Indesit is a silver fridge freezer that is really reasonable, it's A rated but is not frost free. I just bought a Bosch frost free, it's good but you lose quite a lot of space. In my opinion it is worth it just for the convenience, but it sounds as though you have quite a lot of lovely things to freeze. Also Samsung, stainless steel, Beko silver and Bosch stainless steel and frost free. They are the top 5 from the supplier I used with excellent reviews. Happy hunting.

My brain cells must be damaged!
In WHITE, which is what you actually want, there is a Beko with good reviews. Sorry.

Brilliant - Electrolux, Hotpoint, Beko, Curry's, I'll do some internet research and let you know the result.
Though I've just remembered there's no old fridge to take away so I'm free to look for the lowest price for delivery as well.

And thank you Noreen for correcting my spelling of Fridge without being asked, that was going to bother me every time I saw it.

'Quote' seems to have stopped working again. Never mind. I've been a lurker for a week but thought I'd better reply to Queen Jean.

You wrote "id just like a fridge freezer that is daughter proof ... hubby says get a combination lock on it ... dont start me off on the shed stuff we never see again ladders mowers decorating tools ,please tell me its not just us help"

Queen Jean, it doesn't matter whether it's just you, that isn't acceptable behaviour. Why not tell hubby you need his help. Get him to tell your daughter to stop what she's doing. And get him to ask for your things back. And if that doesn't work, get him to buy those combination locks and put them on the fridge and the shed :0)

Chazza and your FF purchase

Not nosey at all !!!, actually I feel a bit embarrassed that I haven't done it yet, my only excuse is a sudden rush of work which I'd like to finish before the fantastic Summer weather begins.

So I've not been around much for ten days or so, I have another week+ of joining this wire to that, and making sure that even the daftest of users can't get their coffee into where the electricity lives, then I'll be back.

Thanks for asking, and thanks everyone for your help x

Hope you're all enjoying Wimbledon

Fridge freezer purchase

And the winner was a Beko CXFD5104W Fridge Freezer from Currys, and very good it is.

It was £260, has the biggest capacity for its price I could find, it's quiet, has a blast chiller that works, and a 6 liter container that dispenses chilled water from the front without opening the door. I am so tempted to put something other than water in there.

I ordered it from Currys om a Friday evening, paid an extra £20 for next day delivery and it arrived at 9.00 a.m. The installers were quick and helpful, they took all the packaging with them and would have removed an old fridge free of charge if I'd had one to get rid of.

Altogether a very good experience. Thanks to all of you who were kind enough to offer your advice.

Hi Chazza
Good to see you haven't vanished altogether:)
Also good you got a fridge you're happy with.
You would have got good use out of it considering all the hot weather I hear you've been having lately!!

new fridge/freezer

Just read this thread & I too have got a beko fridge/freezer when my previous one failed in the cold just before last xmas. I e-mailed several companies asking about temperatures they operate in(attached garage) & Beko contacted me within 1/2 hour after 4pm on a friday. Infact were the only company to reply. Seriously impressed! The model operates to -15 in it's operating range. So when my chest freezer packed up three weeks ago I immediately bought a Beko. AS you say delivered rapidly & efficiently really pleased with the purchases.
