Barley wine alternative

Haven't a clue what galangal is, or need to know what to use if you can't buy creme fraiche locally? We're sure our knowledgeable members will be able to point you in the right direction...

Barley wine alternative

I'm doing Delia's Traditional Christmas pudding and I can't find barley wine.

;o) I can't help but think that it must be like wine but made with barley!

Other Christmas pud recipes normally use rum or brandy etc, is this what I should use instead?!

Any help would be lovely!

Barley wine

Not actually ever had this Angel but I think it is a type of beer rather than a wine.

BARLEY WINE

This is a strong beer sold in small bottles. it's still on the market, often called "Gold Label".Haven't looked for it but try supermarkets or Bargin Booze type shops. Any strong ale of which there are many on the market should be a suitable substitute. Ive used Guiness or dark stout in puddings many times. Brandy a good alternative. Happy mixing. Foxy x

Thanks!

I'm glad I used more stout that had a honey flavour, like Mead, thanks to Gerry too.
It's steaming now and smells super,
I've also made the christmas cake and it's cooking everything smell's very christmassy but the kitchen looks like the proverbial bomb has hit it!!

Once bitten twice shy this stuff is a killer about 15 years ago i when out and bought a crate of this stuff Gold Label Barley Wine in them days it was sold in small dark brown bottles (now in cans)i got as drunk as a Lord the following morning i had the worst ever hangover in my life i honestly felt i was going to die i have never touched the stuff since, i get hangovers but never as bad as that. I think its over 10% a bottle.

Barley wine

I have always used Barley wine in Delia's pudding recipe. It's available in most supermarkets in cans in the beer section unfortunately in packs of 4. As I only ever use it once a year I begrudge buying that many. We used to have an off-licence that sold individual cans but it has just closed down. I'm hoping that doubling the amount of stout will give the same result because it really is a GREAT pudding recipe!

Best before date

I managed to find Barley Wine last year and bought two bottles but only used one. So I have the other one, it has a best before date of Dec 2011. I went back to the one shop which sells it and they don't have it. Do you think it would be ok to use the bottle with best before date from 1 year ago?
