Slug pellets and pets

Slug pellets are labelled as being toxic to pets and children. Has anyone every heard of a cat or dog eating enough to make them ill? I'm using the mini pellets so the dose would be lower.

I know there are non-chemical remedies such as eggshells and beer-traps but the area we have set aside for some of the veg this year has a very damp area just alongside and snails and slugs abound!

Many thanks.

Birds will eat the slugs that have eaten the pellets.

Does that harm the birds?

If you want to know if any pet has been harmed, ask a vet.

Farm dogs have been killed, but that is when pellets have been spilled in the field. Garden use is pretty safe as the pellets are widely spaced. Most people put far too many out.

But if you kill all the slugs and snails what is the beneficial wildlife to eat?

I think the problem comes when slugs and snails kill food crops for Man. I don't put pellets down in the hedgerows round my garden, or the flowered areas, just the veg areas.

Slug pellets kill a lot of hedgehogs and it is a dreadful prolonged painful death. Try using nemotodes instead, wildlife and pet safe, google them to find a supplier.
