Kos

Hi, I have found a good priced holiday in Kos and am thinking of going but have never been. Would anyone recommend it? The resort is Lambi although the accomodation is just outside and supposed to be in a quiet area. We are in our early fifties and like to have something to see as well as relax and usually love the Greek food and tavernas etc. We are not ones for clubs or anything like that but prefer to see local customs if possible although do not mind it a bit lively if you can get away from it too. Any info would be good. Thank you in advance.

We went to Kos a couple of years ago, but it was end of season and pretty much everything was closing up. Might be an idea to try Trip Advisor - the site is brilliant for holiday reviews and their forum is great. x

Enjoy your holiday and Yammas. x

Thanks Saffy. I looked at the hotel on Trip Advisor and 95% of people recommend and it had great reviews, only one bad one but I didn't even think about looking at the forum so will have a look!We like other Greek islands so we probably will like it but was curious as to what others on here thought if they had been. x

If there's only one bad review I'd ignore it - there's ALWAYS going to be a moaning minnie who will find something to complain about. Invariably they're miserable, bad tempered and rude and will get bad service becuase that's what they deserve with the way they treat the staff. x

Kos

We went to Kos a couple of years back and I've gotta say, it's not my favourite Greek island.
It's very dusty and really quite grotty in the interior, lacking the pretty villages and beautiful scenery you find on many greek islands. There was a lot of rubbish flying around. It can also be rather windy.
On the plus side, we DID like Kos Town vey much and I think Lambi is on the edge of it. The rowdy resort (Kardemena) is tucked away quite a way from Kos Town so no big prob there. We did enjoy the food, as ever. 95% recommended on TA is good too. We don't regret going there, it's nice to see all the different sorts of islands, but it wouldn't be somewhere I'd pay a 2nd visit to.

kos- F.W.

Thanks for that FW. I really do want an honest answer although obviously everyones idea of a good destination is different. Not so sure if it is for us then although the holiday is very cheap so may go anyway but really I am looking for pretty harbours and villages, nice beaches, a ruin or two and good food and tavernas. Any ideas?

Skopelos is beautiful. No airport though, so you fly to Skiathos and then it's a ferry accross to the island. Not a huge touristy destination due to no airport - the Greeks holiday there, so prices tend to be better. Skopelos town is picture perfect and loads of great tavernas. Lovely island to travel around - quite small and the buses were good when we were there. Lots of little harbours and lots to see. However, beaches were shingle rather than sand ( I prefer shingle anyway so this is fine with me). x

Kos, a bit different to other islands but I did enjoy the food, more of an Italian feel, a legacy and I don't feel as though I want to go again.

a few of my favourite places are :-

Fiskardo on Cephalonia, quite a lot of trendy shops and loads of restos when I was last there and the harbour is expanding because there is a huge amount of flotilla holidays cruising the area. Great sitting in a cafe watching the flotillas coming in in the afternoon.

Paxi, just off of Corfu, only 3 main villages and you have to go by boat from Corfu Town.

Skopelos, as Sue says. Lovely island.

and Parga on the mainland quite close to Corfu but there are many other places I really would like to return to. All of these places I have been to several times, sometimes on sailing holidays and sometimes shore based.

Jo... how about a Shirley Valentine type holiday? Don't tell our hubbies, just b*gger off for a week. I'll meet you at Gatwick at 6pm!
