Visiting Rome in winter?

Hi. I would like to visit Rome but have been put off going at the more popular times as I have been told it is like 'sardines' everywhere with so many tourists. Was thinking of going in January. Has anyone been then and if so was it ok. Or would you advise me not to bother then because of weather.

Rome

I've not been in Rome in winter but it's absolutely gorgeous in May. Hot but not too hot. Busy, of course, but not too busy. Fab city!

Visiting Rome in winter?

Gets too hot in summer - we were in Florence in June one year while travelling round Italy and it was over 40 degrees, which was bad enough - we didn't go to Rome because it was 50 degrees!! Unbearable in a campervan!!

i think Spring would be a wonderful time to go. In January you could be lucky and get lovely winter sunshine, or unlucky and it could be all gloomy and miserable, which would be a shame.

Rome

I went in March. Was spring like - jeans, t shirt and jumper/jacket, did rain several times though.
