Pastry Brushes

I've always used the old bristle type but see now that you can get the ones with silicone-type bristles. I'm thinking of replacing mine with the silicone ones. I know they are not expensive so it isn't the cost but are they preferable to use?

I like mine Dottie May.

The very best things about them is no brissles come loose, and you can pop them into the dishwasher.

The "brissles" do not hold so much liquid if you know what I mean, so you need to dip more often. However, I have seen an Oxo one in the lakeland catalogue which has hold in the brissles to help it hold more liquid, so I might get one of those to my next order.

At the mo, I just have the lakeland two pack which was quite inexpensive. A blue which I kept, and a red which Mum had.

Hi DM, agree with James, these silicone brushes are great, much easier to clean, I just put them in the dishwasher. Lots of bright colurs in the shops too. foxy x

I've got both types Dot, but I still use my trusty bristle one for pies, scones etc. as I find the "fronds" a little too big for the pastries I use the silicon ones for meat, fish etc .

I use both but find I tend to use the Oxo as mentioned more frequently these days.

Many thanks folks for your comments. I will hang to my bristle one but will also get the silicone one. I do find that although the bristle type holds liquid ok, mine is quite hard and drags along pastry so thought a silicone would be better.

I have both bristle and silicone and really don't like my silicone one, have reverted back to using the bristle one again.... :)

I seem to be in the minority, but I detest those silicone 'brushes'. Get yourself a pack of cheap paint brushes from, for example IKEA, and use those.

why not just use your fingers,I do. I had one of those wooden handled bristle brushes, it was rubbish, the hairs come out all over the pie, not a pretty sight.

The hairs come out of my bristle brush too some times. I've got a few spare cheap watercolour brushes which I will try. Thanks for the suggestion but maybe if they are cheap the hairs will fall out of those like they do when painting!! Will have a go with my fingers next time.

Fingers not so good when doing garlic infused butter. I keep separate brushes for sweet and savoury.

Not as useful

The silicon ones are good in that I feel they clean easily. However, I don`t think ingredients adhere to them in the way that natural brushes are better. Milk and egg doesn`t seem to stick to silicon. Silicon is fine for oils but for brushing milk onto pastry - well I don`t think so.

I prefer my silicone one to the brisle one as the bristles kept falling out .As others have said much easier to clean in the dishwasher .

Silicon brushes are OK for basting but a pain in the you know what for pastry.
A cheap paint brush will do a better job for pastry and a more expensive pure brissle brush will not lose its brissles as readily as a cheap one will.
