Do I really need a microwave?

Keen to know which brand to buy? Or want to share a great purchase with the rest of us? This is the place to do it...

Do I really need a microwave?

How many of you lovely people do not own a microwave?
I have a very small kitchen and I'm starting to resent how much space my seldom-used microwave takes up.
I'm considering tossing it out.
Are there any cooks out there with some strong arguments for NOT having a microwave? (I'm concerned that I will miss it once it's gone)

Microwave

I can tell you lots of reasons to KEEP it! I would miss it for so many things.

It is difficult to argue a negative, but I'm sure there are loads of people who don't have one because they say they are 'dangerous'!

If you use it infrequently you probably aren't aware of what a useful appliance it is.

But then I don't use my pressure cooker or slow-cooker all that often but I would not consider chucking them!

I second everything Welshcookie said!!

I use my microwave a lot, so wouldn't consider not having one.
But it's obviously a personal decision - just think carefully before tossing it!
Is there a cupboard/pantry you could put it in to free up some bench space?

Don't have a slow-cooker, but the pressure cooker is invaluable for some things - wouldn't be without it.

Microwave

Totally agree with Welshcookie and Sonya. Would hate to be without a microwave. Mine is used daily.

microwave

Why don't you put the microwave away, maybe in a spare room for a couple of weeks and see how you manage without it. You maybe surprised at how much you miss it or maybe not.
I think I could live without one but not sure what I would fill the space with.

Microwave

I posted on here a few weeks ago when my combi oven failed. It's fixed now but in the time without it I realised how little I use the microwave alone.

I missed it for defrosting, heating (wet) plates and dishes and cooking raw poppadums, but that was all. My oven is built in but if it had to go on the work surface I wouldn't have one.

never had a microwave

I have never had a microwave and would never buy one.
Most people I know only use them to heat things up and never cook in them.
I get on very well with my gas cooker and single electric oven.
But each to their own!!

Depends on the kind of cooking you do and the microwave. Mine is a combi and I use it in that mode every day as well as mic for defrost, warming, etc. Some dishes are best cooked in the mic, to my taste. Great for white sauce, incredibly. Put flour, milk and butter in a plastic jug, mic for 1m, stir, 1m stir, etc. until thick. Done in a jiffy if you stir between other tasks. Jug goes in the dishwasher. As GQ or was it VE said, put it away for a week or so then decide.

Hi Tomps,
What sort of things do you actually cook on 'combi'?
I use mine either as a convection oven or a microwave. Often use the microwave plus grill, but very rarely in a 'combi' mode!

Do I need a microwave?

Hi Sonya, I use combi more and more. Jacket pots (mine has a prog for them but you can do it just with 1/3 mic and 180C oven), frozen pizzas with lots of home made topping - max temp and around 250W mic gets the topping steaming hot and the base crip, home-made frozen dishes e.g. spinach, smoked salmon and cheese sauce from the freezer - pre-heat oven to 180C pop the dish in uncovered and use the max mic your oven allows in combi with the 180C oven gives you piping hot dish with just browning top in less than 20mins from the freezer. Loads more ideas I haven't tried yet. Jackets done this way are the best jackets you will get. I did a 400g sweet potato and a 400g normal potato in 20 mins this evening on combi programmed, and they were perfect.

Thanks for that, Tomps.
My combi oven is a bit different - harder to programme like that, I think.

Also, it's out of action right now, so can't experiment until we get it fixed.
Or get a new one - ours is 10 years old so wondering whether to replace it.
What make/model do you have and do you recommend it?

I cook all the time but never use a microwave

Hi, I think there are many ways to cook. I used to own a combi, my mother still does and uses hers all the time, I got rid of mine pretty quickly. I cook all day, and regrettably fall into the camp that can easily live without a microwave and have so much pleasure with hands on cooking on the stove, ovens, etc. I think there is wisdom in putting the microwave away for at least two to three months, to really get used to not using it, enjoying the space it took up, and then make your decision. Give it time and see what you think. Good luck.

Yes or No

Well, my question is as you say you don't use it much would you miss it? Is there a job it does for you that wouldn't be done by anything else? I use mine a lot because it is quick at making small batches of jam and lemon curd - it defrosts meat quickly if I am in a rush and a quick cup of milky coffee while I am reading one of Delia's cookbooks is a daily must!
