There's an article in today's Daily Mail (P38) praising Lakeland's food dehydrator (£49.99) for dried apple, banana, beetroot crisps, ..... sounds really interesting but this was advertorial, I suppose? Has anyone tried this product or anything similar?

I have a 'Fowlers' dehydrator (Aussie brand) that looks very similar to the Lakeland one. I used mine a lot for a while but haven't for a few years. Must dig it out again this summer!!

I notice the Lakeland one has a fixed temperature of 85C.
Mine has variable temps and fruits are best dried between 50 to 60C to preserve nutrients, so I've read.
Obviously it would do the job faster at higher temp. - it's a very slow process and I found often took longer than the manual said.
just looked in my manual and it says e.g. for Apples 6-10 hours, Lakeland 5-6hrs. But for Apricots 10-16hrs, Lakeland 12-38hrs !! and Tomatoes 8-12hrs, Lakeland 8-24hrs!!
Basically you have to try it and keep checking the fruit!!

My machine has sheets to put onto the trays for making fruit 'leathers' - dried pureed fruit. Not sure if the Lakeland one does.

2 points I found annoying. Mine makes a noise - the fan pushing the air upwards - which can be annoying for hours on end! (Like a bathroom fan, I guess)
They pump out hot air for hours - not so bad in UK perhaps, but over here in summer!!!
I put the dehydrator in our laundry, or sometimes outside, to help with those problems.

Thanks, Sonya :) Yes, it's said that anything over 48C is really 'cooking' not 'dehydrating'. The Excalibur horizontal ones look interesting but pricey :0 I'm sort of interested in the leather goo but would like to try some first...but where from?

Seems as though in the winter the surplus heat is no bad thing...it heats the house anyway. In the non-heating season it is just 100% waste.

I'm of two minds. We can't have everything.

You can always just use the oven. That works OK so long as you don't want to do it too often, as it takes so long.
Not as energy efficient but saves buying new kit and all the energy the manufacture of that kit involved.

Have you tried jam making in the bread machine yet?

But usually it's in the summer that you want to dry fruit, tomatoes, etc.!!!!

Hi Sonya, No, not tried the jam...won't either! I'm not keen on using the oven for so many hours. Ebay prices are high. My wife's a car boot fanatic, I'll see if she can get one for a fiver. She got a perfectly good slow cooker for £2 a couple of months ago.
