Growing Ginger

I recently planted two pieces of ginger root that were showing shoots. Both have been sucessful but are now about 12 inches high and still going. Does anyone know if they will spread out or if there is anything I can do to make them branch out?

Ginger

Hi, ours grows to around 4 feet high so needs some support usually against the wall. We have found it best to plant in a shallow but wide container as the ginger bit below the soil is doing the growing, sideways. Harvested the last lot just before Christmas and that was planted last February / March. We grow it in a sunny position inside the house as night time temps go too low to plant outside (we are in the middle of France).

Thanks Biggles, I've got mine growing in the kitchen at the present time where's it nice and warm. Can I expect to see any flowers? and if so when?

Hi, we have certainly never seen any flowers, just tall and leggy growth of the leaves. In one way I'm a bit disappointed with what we are growing here because the very first 'root' I grew produced some lovely leaves, smallish and compact. However, we now grow our own, if limited, supply of ginger and that is very exciting. Last year we waited for the green growth to die off before harvesting but this year (winter 2009) had to harvest early as we had no space to keep the shallow troughs inside the house.

It may be that you will get flowers after a couple of years from the rhizome but I think the leaves will die off on an annual basis. It's good fun though isn't it.

Stem Ginger?

Are those long stems the things that people make stem ginger from? I put my shop bought ginger in damp earth to stop it drying, and the occasional neglected bit has thrown a shoot without problem, but then the root gets eaten shortly afterwards.

stem ginger

Hi Chazza, stem ginger is made from the root and not the stem. Odd, isn't it. If i manage to grow a bumper crop this year I'll use this recipe to make some stem ginger.

Preserved Ginger recipe:
1 lb fresh gingerroot, peeled and scrubbed and cut into 2 inch pieces
1 1/2 cups water
1 lb sugar


Rinse scrubbed and peeled roots and soak in cold water overnight.
Drain.
Place in saucepan in cold water to cover. Bring to a boil.
Drain and repeat process 3 or more times (depends on how old the ginger is).
In a separate pan, boil sugar and 1-1/2 cups water together for 20 minutes to make the syrup. Stir in the drained ginger root and heat until syrup comes to a boil. Remove pan from heat and let stand overnight.
Store in airtight glass jars in the refrigerator,

Re growing ginger

Hi I have just read this topic on growing ginger with interest as I have been considering growing ginger the problem is I can't find any ginger in my local garden centres or veg suppliers and was wondering if someone can let me know if it is ok to grow ginger from ginger that has been brought from a shop? I would be greatful for any tips and advice anyone can give me.

Growing GInger

Hi Paul, this is all we have ever done, use ginger brought from the supermarket. Look for a piece that looks as though it is beginning to produce little nodules. Or, if it all looks very smooth buy a bit and forget about it in the veggie drawer for a couple of weeks. That's actually how we started to grow. As above, it needs space to grow horizontally.

will go and get some from the supermarket as you did and plant it, I will start it off in a large pot and plant it in my allotment when weather permits thanks again for advice will let you all know the outcome when its grown, so it grows tall and wide then? or did I miss read it?

Growing ginger

Hi Paul, don't know where you are in the UK but I'd be pleasantly surprised if you could successfully plant out and grow the ginger plant in the UK. I'm in the Limousin and would not try it. I have a friend in Poitou Charentes (where it is usually 5 degrees warmer) who is going to try and grow it outside this year. I'll wait on results. We harvest it quite late in the year and the night temperatures in the autumn are considered too cold. Growth for us has been tall and leggy. I'll not pretend it makes a great house plant, but it was great the other year when a visitor said "oh I need some more ginger but I've used it all". OH said no prob and went and dug some up fresh. He enjoyed that :0)

The rhizome grows horizonatally from the piece you start with so it needs plenty of room to expand, sideways. Does not require a huge depth of compost.

Very useful ginger tutorial

I love ginger and would be lost without it, so it's been tremendous to learn so much about growing it. I'll stop planting the poor things upright from now on.

Any thoughts about the soil needed? You mentioned compost, is this any special kind?

more thoughts on growing ginger

Just chatting to hubby about this over a cup of tea (been out all afternoon, shopping) and he says the best thing is your own compost but we don't have much of that yet and have been buying 'potager compost' for the tommies and he has been using that. Thinks !! perhaps a grow bag could be the answer, with the top cut out. Pieces of ginger planted perhaps 8-9 inches apart, pointy nodule which hopefully is looking green, upwards. The rhizome does not produce much in the way of a root system. marginally less than perhaps an onion.

We still get excited and are novices ourselves.

Still eating our home grown tatties from last year, can't be bad but they are on their last legs.

Isn't it great that this new Delia site has a gardening segment :0)

Gardening segment

Yes, great to see it here, so close to such a huge collection of recipes.

We are at the very last of our taters but still have plenty of carrots, parsnips and leeks.

We also have an area outside the kitchen that is continually blasted by the extraction fans from our house and the one next door, so it stays permanently heated. Even the recent snow couldn't settle so we have some brave herbs either still going or re-sprouting already.

I'll be making space out there for the ginger.
