Herb Massacre

It seems like every few weeks I buy herb plants which then seem to die very quickly in my kitchen - any tips on planting and then keeping alive indoor herb plants ....

What do you buy ?

As they are grown in perfect conditions can be hard to keep them going once home.
I just take cuttings and pot them up to keep a supply going.
If on a windowsill bring them further into the room at this time of year, once cold they will turn up their toes PDQ !

Oregano will bolt no matter what so I never bother.

I agree, so will be looking to seeing some replies. The only herb that keeps for weeks in my kitchen is Greek Basil - the one with the little bushy leaves. I have problems with herbs in the garden too. Oregano, thyme and rosemary survive but the rest get eaten by something. Even mint doesn't last five minutes!

I'm sure those lovely ones potted up in the supermarkets are programmed to die after a couple of weeks, making sure we have to buy more! My hardier ones in the garden always bolt, but never mind, good to have fresh leaves on hand.

hi there- most herbs grow better outside really - if you have space for some pots on the patio- they do really well grown this way (not the best time of year now tho' as alot die back in the winter) also the herbs you buy at the garden centre should last alot longer than supermarket bought ones. you need to get hardy varieties- thyme, sage, rosemary, oregano/marjoram, chives, mint- they all do well in pots.
basil + coriander aren't hardy so keep them on a kitchen windowsill inside during cold weather. different herbs like different conditions so it kind of depends on what you want to grow how you keep them (and some are only annuals so don't have a long life anyway)
(but saying that parsley, chives and basil should be ok on a bright window inside- basil doesn't like to be kept too wet,
as the others have said coriander is tricky- i find it always goes to seed very quickly!)

Murdered mint

seem to have murdered my mint plant, have cut it down but it hasn't come back, am thinking i should file it under B for bin and F for fail, and go back to buying small packs of fresh herbs in the shops

You don't say if it is in the garden or in a pot inside. If in the garden it may throw up new shoots in the next few weeks; it dies down each winter.

If it's in a pot in the house, it may be worth giving it some water to see if there might be some new growth......

Herb massacre...

I heard some advice from a gardening program (can't remember which one) about herbs purchased from supermarkets that die soon after.
Apparently, there are too many plants in one pot. The gardener's advice was to split the plants up and re-pot them into separate pots so that their roots have more room to grow.

Have to diasgree re. shop bought herbs. No point re potting they just become "leggy". Then they die.

What is needed is a good root system. Impossible if you simply pot on. Keep tender Med. herbs all year apart from the infamous coriander ! Pick a top off to the axel, in water, pot up once roots look healthy. Small pot obviously, free draining compost,then give light but no draught. Feed with seawood solution once established.

This article is very interesting. I will certainly give this a try. I wonder if it will work on the really delicate herbs like coriander. Do you think it would be worth trying some stood on capillary matting in a heated propagator in the greenhouse? The humidity in there might help? Mind you, I've had problems with white fly on my coriander in the greenhouse... so may be not a good idea. Certainly worth a try... nothing to lose really. When I do a curry, the whole 79p's worth of coriander goes into the dish and then the pot is thrown away, so I would only be losing 79p if it didn't work.
