Black Russians

We know many of you are keen on gardening, so here's your latest plot: dug over, weed free and ready to sow the seeds of new ideas...

Black Russians

I planted some Black Russian tomatoes and they have done really well, considering I don't have a greenhouse and are on a south facing wall.
The thing is, I assumed that when the skins turned black that they were ripe, but they are very hard and green inside.
Does anyone know when to tell how ripe they are.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Karen

PS Noreen, if you are down my way, I can probably let you have some walnut saplings to replace your tree.

I'm growing a Tomato called "Cherokee Purple" and the advice I've been given is the colour darkens as the tomato ripens and the flesh feels soft to the touch. Because the colour is different from a red tomato it may take some experience to know exactly when to pick a coloured one. Not sure if this helps. By the way mine are growing in a gro-bag in my small greenhouse and at the moment are still very green.
