Asian Hornets

We had these visit our garden in June & July this year. They spent their time on our little lemon tree on the patio.

Yesterday on another site i go on, i found out that they were Asian Hornets and not bees.

Not very nice creatures and they are supposed to be killing the Honey Bee.Also not good if you get stung by one.

There was a piece about them in the Telegraph in August, saying the were on the move from the south of France and could reach the UK soon.

If you find a nest you are to call out an expert to remove them and not do it yourself.

Asian Hornets - not nice

Morning all. Have sent both you a link to a site which has some good info about wildlife in France; well I have found it very helpful as it is in English :0)

Apparently it takes just a few Asian hornets to stake out a honey bee hive and they will kill the entire colony of bees. Not good news as the honey bee population is already in crisis.

Found out a couple of days ago that the grues (cranes) are getting ready to make their return journey very soon to their wintering quarters. I'm looking forward to seeing the skies darkened by thousands of these birds flying in their huge formations and hearing the noise. I love it :0)

Very best wishes for your long journey Sue. Will be thinking of you all.

Hi Yummy & Bigs,
Yummy they look alot like a bee, but bigger and their legs are a yellow colour.

Off tomorrow,
spent the last few days going back & forth to Paris.
Went on monday to embasy, got photographed finger printed by a scan machine then finger printed with ink, didn't even give us anything to wipe the ink off. Then they told us to come back again on Wednesday to collect. Three trips to Paris at peak hours isn't cheap.
Going to spent this afternoon showing nephew around.

I'm hornet hornet hornet

I had a nest of hornets in my attic - frightening creatures. However the good news is that they leave the nest in late autumn and don't return to the same nest. I didn't call in anyone to destroy the nest - nor did I spray them with wasp killer as my neighbour suggested.
They are not easy to photograph but I got one interesting shot. Go to http://www.jeremytaylor.eu/czech_animals.htm and scroll down the page. Good thing they are only a couple of centimetres long!

Asian Hornets

Haven't seen any Asian ones here but seen one or two of the ordinary ones. They look very vicious don't they? By the way Jeremy, thoroughly enjoyed looking through your web site.
