Autumn Leaves

This is an excellent year for the colours of leaves - especially when the sun is out. We have two huge beech trees and the leaves are dropping in our garden. Every Monday we put out 5 bag fulls for refuse collection - have filled 3 compost bins and have 12 black bags filled at the bottom of the garden so that they can rot down. I'm hoping for a gale so that leaves get blown away as I'm really getting fed up with them now.

Yes, Dottie, but 12 months from now you'll have the most amazing compost. We just emptied our leaf cage to start again with this new lot and the compost is wonderful stuff!

Autumn leaves

they do make the most wonderful compost don't they, esp once the worms get inside.

this new house, has lots of trees surrounding it, so i have a right mix of different leafage, i just bundle up into black sacks at the moment as we haven't got round to making a composter yet.

getting stuff for free is great.

You've both made me feel a lot better after reading your comments. Many thanks. I'll see if I can get a cage made to empty the black bags into.

Our cage works brilliantly. We got it (free) from our local garden nursery as they were about to chuck it out. It's like a tall cylindrical tower made from very thick wire mesh and using chicken wire OH lined it & made a mesh lid. It sits on a brick base & lives at the bottom of our garden next to the main compost zone & we watch the leaves compress as the year passes until we get the fab stuff. We find it much more effective than bin liners which we used to use.
What I really wanted was one like they have at RHS Harlow Carr - it's a giant teapot made from wire mesh & looks cool! Fascinates me every time we go there! I think one of their horti-students made it. Hope he/she got an A+ grade!
