When do you start planting????

Right i have got the garden ready all i need to know is when do i start planting. They have started to bring out Potato/onion & courgettes.tomatoes in the garden centre.

Not planning on buying packet seeds, will buy small plants from the market.

Have been watching a little old french man (he looks about hundred years old) he has just finished getting his soil ready, we pass him every day on the way to school, and it will be just my luck when they block the road to do road works when he starts planting.

So when is the best time to get started? never got around to buying a book so have no idea
thanks for any advice

Planting

Oh Sue ! You do make me laugh - in the nicest possible way of course !
Why don't you ask him - never known a gardener not happy to share knowledge.

Every area, even garden, has it's own micro climate.

Good Luck !!

Planting

Sandra, if only it was that easy. I say Bonjour every afternoon when we go on our bikes & all we get is a strange look.
We are the outsider's here, even my husband who is french is an outsider.

They are a strange lot the French, if you are not born & bred and every house in the village is a family member it takes a long time to be accepted.

I will keep on watching, maybe he thinks i have taken a fancy to him.
Will have to watch out for the wife now.

When do you start planting?????

Not sure where in France you live but wondered if Yummy can give you some advice - as you prob. know, she lives in Brittany. I think it's a bit early to plant out yet in the UK but I could be wrong - had a slight frost yesterday morning. I'm sure you will get the advice you are seeking from someone on this site. Good luck with the old French gent....

When to start planting

Good advice from Sandra, Sue. I am sure your old neighbour will have good advice, or just watch him to begin with, but I am sure it will break the ice and you will form a good relationship.
One word I would say is that here in France they plant/garden with the moon and I saw in the Maison du Presse the other day an almanac for just this so perhaps you could look out for something there.
We have had some lovely warm days and the soil is warming up so I have been splitting some of my bigger established plants and planting them elsewhere......they have got two chance, grow or not !! Bon Chance !

Re planting

Expat, maybe you could try growing grapes and make ice wine! We bought some in a winery near Niagara, paying just at the moment there was a massive power outage - 2003 I think. Gorgeous wine, though more like a liqueur!

When do you start planting?????

I visited our local Garden Centre yesterday and bought three Delphiniums which they said could be planted straight away as they had already been outside for some time. They suggested that the Polyanthus plants they had for sale were under cover and unless I could keep them in a cold greenhouse for a little while, it was better not to buy them yet so I didn't. We had a slight frost last night.

Thnaks Yummy

Thank you Yummy the F5 worked and cleared the page.

Thanks for the advice, tried with the old neigbour but have been warned that he is not nice and talks to no one.

Daughter came home from school with a note stated they need veg & bulbs to grow a garden, so i sent her back to school asking, when do they start planting.

We have lovely weather at the moment, need a coat at 8 to get to school but by 10 it has warmed up enough to be without. Not sure it will last long so will wait & watch everyone else in the village.

time to plant

yes Elpe the thought crossed our minds - ice wine is so expensive too!

weather man on radio this morning said they can see LOTS of snow in long range forecast - bit of a shame as it's all just melted and we're feeling quite springlike.

planting

We still have frosty mornings, sent mother in law to chat up the man at the market who sell seedling etc, he said he would let her know when to start planting here, due to the weather changing every 5 minutes
